Close up
Hoytma uses close-ups in his filmmaking to draw attention to the main characters and display the importance of their presence in the storyline as well as their reactions and behaviours. This technique can also be used to create an intimate or claustrophobic feeling; this makes us feel as if we are in an enclosed space with the characters. However, I believe he uses this technique so that the audience can develop an emotional connection with the characters. Sometimes, cinematographers use a technique called an extreme close-up which essentially is a close shot of a specific facial feature such as eyes or mouth. This is to emphasise narrative through the camera shot. Hoyte is very good at utilising his camera as a storytelling instrument.

Silhouette
A common theme in Hoyte van Hoytma’s cinematography is his usage of silhouettes. He uses silhouettes to reduce detail to the two most basic components of backgrounds and subjects. This creates an astonishing feeling of mystery and emotion and can be used to portray dramatic effects. The sense of mystery comes from the lack of detail which is left for your own brain to fill in. It creates emotion as the subject is empty and void of colour in comparison to the bright background which gives the impression of darkness within the characters mind. It is also a great way to show an audience the background without them getting distracted by the subject. This very much so helps to create atmosphere within the story.
